What's Scooby Doo's Color?

Scooby-Doo, the lovable Great Dane, is an iconic character known worldwide. His distinct appearance, with a smarts-like dumbo ears and a patch of white fur over one eye, is easily recognizable. But when it comes to Scooby's fur color, there seems to be some confusion.

Despite his name suggesting a Scooby Snacks-induced smooth chocolate look, Scooby-Doo's fur color has been depicted differently across various series and media. Let's dive into the history and evolution of Scooby's fur color, explores the reasons behind the changes, and discusses the impact on his character.

Original Scooby-Doo Design

For the first time we saw Scooby-Doo in "Scooby-Doo, Where Are You!" in 1969, he was envisioned as a brown dog with a saddle-back pattern, similar to a police dog. This design was influenced by the show's creators' desire to depict Scooby as a generic, not breed-specific, dog.

The original design also featured a distinctive black nose, which later changed to more of a brown or fawn color, further distinguishing him from other characters in the series like his human counterparts, Shaggy and Daphne, who both have black dogs.

Scooby's Color Evolution

Throughout the years, Scooby-Doo's fur color has changed, primarily between shades of brown and beige. In "The Scooby-Doo Show" (1976-1979), Scooby's fur lightened to a more beige or light fawn color, a change that stuck with him for many years. This lighter shade allowed him to stand out better against the vibrant colors of the animated backgrounds.

In "The New Scooby-Doo Movies" (1972-1974), Scooby was also lightened, but his fur took on a more ginger hue, which was revisited briefly in "Scooby-Doo and Scrappy-Doo" (1979-1980). Interestingly, this ginger color was often used to depict Scooby's alter ego, "Scooby-Dum."

Color Variations in Modern Media

In recent decades, Scooby's fur color has largely remained a sandy beige or light brown. The "What's New, Scooby-Doo?" series (2002-2006) saw a return to a darker, more muted brown color, but this was largely due to the more realistic animation style used in the series.

Most recently, in the "Scoob!" movie (2020), Scooby's fur was a light beige shade, consistent with his modern design. This color was chosen to emphasize his goofy, clumsy personality, with his light fur reflecting his naive and simple-minded nature. It also helped him stand out against the dark, detailed backgrounds of the film.

Scooby-Doo's color variations over the years have served as a fun Easter Egg for long-time fans, who can appreciate the character's evolution. But ultimately, Scooby's appearance is less about his color and more about his memorable likeness, adorable expressions, and slapstick humor. So, whether he's brown, beige, or a shade in between, we'll always love our Scooby!
