In the digital age, finding free sheet music can often feel like searching for a needle in a haystack. But worry not, as we've got you covered. Today, we're shedding light on "What Child is This," a classic Christmas carol, and guiding you through the process of finding its piano sheet music online, completely free.

Before we dive into how and where to find the sheet music, let's take a moment to appreciate the history and beauty of "What Child is This." This timeless carol has its roots in the 16th century, with the melody originally composed by William Croft, and lyrics written by William Chatterton Dix in the late 19th century. The song's hauntingly beautiful tune, Greensleeves, and poignant lyrics make it a staple during the holiday season. Now, let's explore how you can master this piece on the piano.

Understanding the Music and Its Structure

"What Child is This" is a relatively simple yet stirring piece to play on the piano. It's written in the key of E minor, with just a few sharps, making it accessible for pianists of varying skill levels. The piece follows a straightforward 4/4 time signature and is structured in four eight-bar phrases, with each phrase repeating twice. Understanding this structure is key to nailing the song's rhythm and flow.

Being familiar with the sheet music's layout will also help you play the song with confidence. You'll find the melody in the right-hand sheet music, while the left hand primarily plays the chords and provides harmonic support. The song's dynamic range is relatively narrow, with most of the piece marked "piano" (soft), although the ending phrase welcomes a majestic "fortissimo" (very loud).

The Importance of Dynamics and Pedaling

While the sheet music indicates the dynamics, it's essential to remember that your touch and pedal use significantly contribute to the song's atmosphere. A soft, delicate touch and occasional Sustain pedal use can create a rich, resonating sound, enhancing the song's emotional impact. Conversely, a more assertive touch and pedal use can build tension and drama.

As an example, during the second phrase, when the lyrics mention "The King of kings," consider building up the intensity with louder dynamics and increased pedal use. Then, gradually decrease the dynamics and pedal use as the phrase concludes with "Love's Pure Light." This dynamic contrast can breathe life into the piece, making it more engaging for both you and your audience.

Learning the Song: Tips and Tricks

When learning "What Child is This," start by playing the left-hand chords slowly and accurately. Once you're comfortable with the chords, introduce the right-hand melody, playing it in conjunction with the chords. Use a metronome to maintain a steady tempo and gradually increase the speed as you become more proficient.

It's also a good idea to practice both hands separately, focusing on their unique roles. For the left hand, practice switching between the chords smoothly, paying close attention to your fingerings. For the right hand, work on maintaining a consistent tone and dynamics throughout the melody. With dedicated practice, you'll be well on your way to mastering this beautiful carol.
