Día de los Muertos, a UNESCO-recognized Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, thrives on the duplicity of life and death, joy and sorrow. Sugar skulls, with their bold colors and intricate designs, personify this dichotomy, transforming the somber into a joyous extravaganza. But how did this sweet tradition come to be?

Unveiling the History Behind Sugar Skulls

The history of sugar skulls can be traced back to Mexico's pre-Hispanic era, where offerings were made to the gods using actuation, or the sweetened water used to make the skulls. Today, these confections are a blend of the Aztec tradition of offering the dead sweets to ease their path to the underworld and the Catholic custom of honoring souls on November 2.

With the Mexican War of Independence and later the Mexican-American War, sugar skulls gained their distinctive calaveras name, derived from the Spanish word 'calavera,' meaning skull. Today, sugar skulls are an iconic symbol of Día de los Muertos, adorning altars, parades, and even folk art.
