The Birth of the Peace Sign

The peace sign, as we know it today, was born in the heat of the Cold War during the British nuclear disarmament movement. Its creator, British designer and activist Gerald Holtom, was commissioned to create a symbol for the Direct Action Committee in 1958.

Holtom combined the semaphore signs for the letters 'N' and 'D', representing nuclear disarmament, within a circle. The resulting design was powerful, simple, and instantly recognizable, Characteristics that endeared it to the public and solidified its place in history.

Deconstructing the Peace Sign Layout

The peace sign, at its core, is a geometrical arrangement of lines and shapes. Let's break down its layout:

• Circle: Encompassing the entire symbol, the circle represents eternity and wholeness.
• Broken Cross: Incorporating the semaphore letters 'N' and 'D', this element signified the horror of nuclear devastation and a desire for disarmament.
• Vertical Line (Base): Completing the design, this line was initially the semaphore sign for the letter 'D'. Its precise significance is debated but often interpreted as representing peace or an elongated 'D'.

One intriguing aspect is the potential influence of the ancient Greek symbol for 'omega', the last letter of the alphabet and a symbol of the end of things. Some suspect that Holtom's design might have been inspired by this symbol, adding another layer of meaning to the peace sign's layout.
