Understanding the Nikon 85mm 1.4D Lens

The Nikon 85mm 1.4D is a telephoto prime lens, designed for Nikon F-mount cameras. Its fast maximum aperture of f/1.4 allows it to capture stunning portraits, low-light photography, and creates a shallow depth of field, isolating the subject from the background.

This lens is equipped with Nikon's Silent Wave Motor (SWM), enabling smooth and silent autofocus, making it ideal for both still and video shooting.

Build Quality and Design

The 85mm 1.4D boasts a robust and durable construction, with a distinctive yellow ring that sets it apart from other Nikon lenses. Weighing approximately 560g, it's not the lightest, but its solid build ensures that it withstands heavy use. Its minimum focus distance of 0.85 meters allows for versatile shooting.

The lens features a distance scale in feet and meters, and it has an aperture ring that can be used to control the aperture manually. It's a full-frame lens, but it can also be used on APS-C format cameras, giving you an effective focal length of 127.5mm.

Optical Performance

The Nikon 85mm 1.4D offers exceptional sharpness, even at its widest aperture. Its nine rounded aperture blades contribute to beautifully smooth bokeh, making it an excellent choice for portrait photography. The lens' ability to maintain sharpness throughout the frame at all aperture values ensures that you capture tack-sharp images every time.

One of the standout features of the 85mm 1.4D is its ability to perform exceptionally well in low-light conditions. Its fast maximum aperture ensures that you can capture bright, well-exposed images even in dimly lit environments.
