How to Create Lightroom Presets
Enhance your Lightroom workflow by creating customized presets. Presets are like shortkeys, enabling you to apply consistent edits to your images with just one click. Here's a step-by-step guide on how to create a preset in the Lightroom app.
Before we dive in, understanding the basics is crucial. In Lightroom, adjustments you make to an image can be saved as a preset. These presets can then be reapplied to other photos, saving you time and ensuring consistency in your editing process.
Getting Started: Select Your Edits
First, open Lightroom and select the image you want to use as a basis for your preset. Make the necessary adjustments in the Develop module. These edits will be what your preset applies when used.
Remember, more specific your adjustments, the more specialized your preset becomes. A preset with broad adjustments, like exposure and contrast, will be useful for many photos, while one with specific color adjustments will only work well on certain types of images.
Saving Your Edits as a Preset
Once you've made your desired edits, it's time to save these as a preset. In the Develop module, click on the '+' icon next to 'Presets' in the right-hand list. Select 'Create Preset'.
A pop-up window will appear. Here, you can choose which edits you want to save. Uncheck any sections you don't want to include in your preset. You also have the option to name your preset here. Make it descriptive so you'll know exactly what it does at a glance.
Organizing Your Presets
After creating your preset, it will be placed in the 'User Presets' folder by default. However, you can create new folders to organize your presets, making them easier to find and manage. Simply right-click on 'Presets' and select 'New Folder'.
To move your preset into a new folder, drag and drop it from its current location into the new folder. You can also right-click on a preset and select 'Move Into Folder' to do the same.
Applying Your New Preset
Now that you've created and organized your preset, let's put it to use. Select the image(s) you want to apply the preset to in the Library module. Go to the Develop module and click on the name of your preset in the Presets panel.Your adjustments should now be applied to the selected image(s).
If the preset doesn't look quite right on a particular image, you can always make further adjustments. Remember, presets aren't set in stone — they're just a starting point, and you can always fine-tune from there.
Editing Your Preset
If you realize you need to adjust something in your preset, it's easy to do so. Right-click on your preset in the Presets panel and select 'Edit'. This will reopen the edit preset dialogue, allowing you to make changes.
You can also delete a preset by right-clicking on it and selecting 'Delete'. Be careful with this, though — once a preset is deleted, it's gone for good.
Congratulations! You're now a Lightroom preset pro. By creating and using your own presets, you can save time, maintain consistency, and experiment with new looks all within the Lightroom app.
